Miss Vera Flynn

Vera Flynn had been the choir mistress at St Candida's since at least 1520 and, quite frankly, helped to put the fear of God into the Rev Aubrey Fishwick on a daily basis.  There was little doubt amongst the faithful of Little Hope that if all else failed and Jerry did indeed come mincing up the High Street then their choir mistress extraordinaire would soon put a stop to his gallop...

The vicar soon came to regret trusting Vera with the keys to St Candida's, for one thing she soon discovered that she had a captive audience and for another, she could be heard as far away as Canterbury on a good day with the wind behind her...

'One of these days,' thought the Rev Fishwick, his hands trembling slightly as Vera shuffled towards him on her knees, 'I'm going to have to explain the difference between praying and preying to this one...'

It suddenly became clear to the Rev  Fishwick why the Bishop wasn't keen on waiting out air raids in the crypt at St Candida's and had twice come a cropper vaulting over the churchyard wall. Yes, he was going to have to have a stern word with these two. That or see if he could get some bromide from Black Market Bertie after Evensong on Sunday...
